In today’s labor history, on this date in 1855 Eugene Victor Debs - labor leader, socialist, three-time candidate for president and first president of the American Railway Union, was born. Today’s labor quote is by George Meany, a key figure in the creation of the AFL-CIO who served as the AFL-CIO's first president, from 1955 to 1979. George Meany, who said: “The labor movement's political activity is aimed at encouraging the greatest possible participation in elections.
