This is Chris Garlock, with the latest labor news, updates and history from the Metro Washington Labor Council.
As the Trump Shutdown drags into its third week, federal workers and their supporters are mobilizing. Two rallies and a social have been planned for this week to demonstrate solidarity with the hundreds of thousands of federal workers furloughed or working without pay. Tomorrow at 7pm at the Silver Spring Civic Center, Maryland Congressman Jamie Raskin is hosting a rally that will feature Virginia Congressman Don Beyer, AFGE President J. David Cox, the D.C. Labor Chorus, as well as federal workers, local businesspeople and other special guests. Then on Thursday at noon, AFGE and the National Federation of Federal Employees will rally at the AFL-CIO and then march on the White House. And on Friday, Montgomery County Councilmember Tom Hucker is organizing a Shutdown Social at Blair High School starting at 6:30pm, with food donated by local restaurants and music hosted by Joe Uehlein. All are welcome and if you’re not a federal worker, please bring a dish to pass. We’ve got complete details on our website at dclabor.org, click on Calendar. And if you know about more events supporting federal workers, email me at [email protected] and we’ll get the word out. In today’s labor history, on this date in 2003, the administration of George W. Bush declared federal airport security screeners would not be allowed to unionize so as not to, quote unquote, "complicate" the war on terrorism. The decision was challenged and eventually overturned after Bush left office. Today’s labor quote is by Hydrick Thomas, president of the AFGE Transportation Security Agency Council, who said: “I just hope our elected leaders stop using federal workers and the valuable services we provide as pawns in their political games."
