Here’s today's labor history: On this date in 1961, the United Mine Workers of America voted to re-affiliate with the AFL-CIO after years of on-and-off conflict with the federation. In 2009 the union’s leader, Richard Trumka, became president of the AFL-CIO, which he still leads today. Today’s labor quote is by John L. Lewis, president of the United Mine Workers of America from 1920 to 1960, who said: "Let the workers organize. Let the toilers assemble. Let their crystallized voice proclaim their injustices and demand their privileges. Let all thoughtful citizens sustain them, for the future of Labor is the future of America."
