“Employers exploit immigrant workers because they think our fear will keep us silent from speaking out against abuses,” says Reyna Sorto, a member of the Painters union who spoke out against the Trump administration’s moves to end the Temporary Protected Status (or TPS) and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals programs. ”Even though TPS is not permanent,” Sorto said, “it does provide a level of protection that can give a worker strength to speak truth to power and denounce exploitative working conditions.”
Here’s today's labor history: On this date in 1869, one of the worst disasters in the history of U.S. anthracite mining occurred at the Avondale Mine, near Scranton, Pennsylvania, when a fire roared up mineshaft, killing 110 miners. Today’s labor quote is by Mother Jones, who said: “Life comes to the miners out of their deaths, and death out of their lives.” Union City Radio is supported by UnionPlus, which is committed to improving the quality of life for all working families; find out more at unionplus.org.
