Just in time for Labor Day, the Metropolitan Washington Labor Council last week released the online version of its 2016-2017 Directory of Local Unions. The Directory – available at dclabor.org, click on Affiliates -- is a handy guide to the local labor movement, listing nearly 200 Council affiliates representing a broad cross-section of 150,000 area workers, from athletes to writers, government workers to the construction trades. The annual Directory has been completely updated with the latest information on the Council’s affiliated locals, as well as Council allies in the community and constituency groups. Also updated this year is the Union Shop listing of DC-area union employers, including restaurants, hotels, parking garages, movie theaters, printers and more.
The print version will be released and distributed soon. On today’s local labor calendar, union organizer and novelist Tim Sheard will discuss his 'Lenny Moss' mystery novels today at noon at the AFL-CIO. Read more on our website at dclabor.org; click on Calendar. Here’s today's labor history: On this date in 1916, federal employees won the right to receive Workers' Compensation insurance coverage. Today’s labor quote is by Tim Sheard ‘There are a lot of working class people whose story deserves to be told.” Retired nurse Tim Sheard is an organizer, novelist and publisher.
