CWA-NABET members at NPR have reached a tentative agreement on a new 4-year contract. The deal includes raises of two and half percent each year, elimination of the two-tier wage steps and a $750-dollar signing bonus.
IBEW Local 1900's members at NRG Energy have approved a 3-year extension to their contract with the energy company, covering several hundred IBEW members working at three generating plants in Maryland. The agreement extends the contract to June 1, 2018, and the first wage increase of three percent will go into effect on June 2nd. Here's today's labor history: On this date in 1935, the Works Progress Administration, or WPA, was approved by Congress. President Franklin Roosevelt proposed the WPA during the Great Depression of the 1930s when almost 25 percent of Americans were unemployed. It created low-paying federal jobs providing immediate relief, putting 8.5 million jobless to work on projects ranging from construction of bridges, highways and public buildings to arts programs like the Federal Writers' Project. In 1952, President Harry S. Truman ordered the U.S. Army to seize the nation’s steel mills to avert a strike. The Supreme Court ruled the act illegal three weeks later.
