Continuing an annual tradition of fellowship and philanthropy, ATU Local 1764 members at the Fairfax Connector bus system have once again raised funds to buy presents and coats for needy children in the area. ATU Local 1764 Steward Mike Taylor reports that over $1,500 was raised from ATU members, and management kicked in an extra $600, bringing in a total of over $2,100 to buy bicycles, toys, and coats for families who could not afford them. Additionally, ATU members volunteered for the annual “Stuff a Bus” event, where buses are parked at local grocery stores in a bid to replenish Fairfax County’s food banks before the holidays.
On today’s labor calendar, there’s a "Santa on Strike" action starting at 12 noon at the Georgia Ave Walmart; complete details at dclabor.org, click on Calendar. Here’s today's labor history: On this date in 1899, delegates to the AFL convention in Salt Lake City endorsed a constitutional amendment to give women the right to vote. Today’s labor quote is by Sojourner Truth, who said: “You have been having our rights so long, that you think, like a slave-holder, that you own us. I know that it is hard for one who has held the reins for so long to give up; it cuts like a knife. It will feel all the better when it closes up again.” Union City Radio is supported by UnionPlus, which provides unique products and discounts for working families. Details at unionplus.org
