After 15 years with UFCW Local 400, and 20 yearswith UFCW, longtime union representative Loyd Baker (right) retired last week. “He spent his last day doing exactly what he’s done so well for all these years – supporting our members,” reports Local 400. “Loyd spent the day on the picket line with CWA members on strike at Verizon before hosting a union meeting later that evening. Even on his last day, his dedication and hard work were undiminished.” Bangladesh garment workers commemorated the third anniversary of the Rana Plaza disaster with calls to bring those responsible for the building collapse to justice. More than 1,100 garment workers died when the multi-story building pancaked on April 24, 2013. Meanwhile, the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) filed a freedom of association case with the International Labor Organization (ILO) citing “persistent and growing violations by the Bangladesh government of its responsibility to respect workers’ rights.
