For more than 40 years, Shoppers has provided good union jobs with fair wages and health and retirement benefits, as well as affordable, fresh food in many lower-income communities that would otherwise be food deserts. But now, warns UFCW Local 400, “thousands of union jobs are at risk and entire communities could be left without access to fresh food” if Shoppers decides to shut down its retail operations. Local 400 urges activists to come out for a “Week of Action” (see Calendar) to support fellow union members whose jobs at Shoppers Food and Pharmacy are in jeopardy. “Just because some far-off corporate office decides to leave the retail business doesn’t mean our community can be cast aside and forgotten,” says Local 400. DC Musicians union president Ed Malaga sent in a couple of photos from the picket outside Meyerhoff Hall on Monday. "Our Washington DC Local 161-710 Executive Board joined the line, and we met with Mary Plaine (Local 40-543 Sec/Treas), David Zinman and former International Conference of Symphony and Orchestra Musicians Chair Bruce Ridge," Ed tells Union City. "Solidarity with our brothers and sisters of the BSO!"
