More than 150 participants, including more than 100 delegates and alternates from 35 locals, participated in AFCSME District Council 20’s first virtual convention on August 22. The Council represents thousands of municipal, state, federal, and private sector employees in the metropolitan Washington and Northern Virginia region. Running unopposed for his third term, Council 20 Executive Director Andrew Washington was re-elected by acclamation and urged the delegates to “remain vigilant in our organizing efforts of essential and frontline workers.” He also strongly urged support for former Vice President Joe Biden in the upcoming November election. In addition to Council 20 executive board elections, the daylong convention reaffirmed the District Council’s commitment to “advocate for fairness in the workplace, excellence in public services, and prosperity for all working families.”
The Metro Washington Council’s endorsement process for the District of Columbia City Council candidates in the November General Election has officially begun. Their returned questionnaires will serve as their RSVP for candidate interviews that will be held on September 16. “DC COPE is excited to review and screen the candidates in all of these very important council seats and we look forward to supporting and electing great candidates who will vocally support labor unions and champion legislation that protect and raise the quality of life for working people,” said MWC Political and Legislative director David Stephen
