That’s Professor Satnam Virdee, Professor of Sociology at the University of Glasgow. He delivered a riveting keynote speech this past Tuesday on "Race, Class and the Politics of Solidarity" at the 2019 Working-Class Studies Association conference at the University of Kent in Canterbury, England. Sixteen elected officials representing parts of Montgomery County on Tuesday delivered a joint letter to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority requesting the agency “review its relationship with Challenger,” a private company contracted to provide MetroAccess paratransit service to county residents.
The letter points to past performance issues with Challenger as well as an escalating labor dispute between the company and its 190 employees, who have authorized but not yet set a date for a strike. In their message, the elected officials called on WMATA to “evaluate whether (Challenger’s CEO) is meeting his moral and legal obligations to the agency, MetroAccess riders, and to the Maryland residents he employs.” On today’s labor calendar, locked out Baltimore Symphony Orchestra musicians picket outside the BSO starting at 9am; And tune in at 1pm this afternoon for this week’s edition of Your Rights At Work, when Ed Smith will answer your questions about workplace rights.
