Leaders of many of the nation’s largest labor unions joined hundreds of poor people and clergy in nonviolent direct action at the U.S. Capitol yesterday afternoon, calling for living wages, the right for all workers to join unions, fully funded anti-poverty programs and free tuition at public colleges. The action came as the new Poor People’s Campaign entered its fifth week with a demand that lawmakers address inequality across the country. The labor community warned that many of the gains for working people could be lost based on what the Supreme Court rules in the pending Janus decision.
On today’s labor calendar, there’s a “Just Wage Symposium” from 4 to 5 pm today at the Notre Dame Washington Program facility on Rhode Island Avenue NW; for details and the latest local labor news and calendar, go to dclabor.org Here’s today's labor history, On this date in 1981, a Major League Baseball strike began, forces cancellation of 713 games. Most observers blamed team owners for the strike: they were trying to recover from a court decision favoring the players on free agency. Today’s labor quote is by Reverend William J. Barber, who said: “When the forces of extremism become so overwhelming that they depress the hope of the people, the prophetic voice and mission is to connect words and actions in ways that build restorative hope, so a Movement for restorative justice can arise.”
