Solid State Books workers announce plans to unionize

3/29/2023

Workers at Solid State Books yesterday announced plans to unionize with UFCW Local 400. “We are unionizing because we love our work, our customers, and the broader H street community,” said the Solid State Union workers organizing committee. “With a collective voice, we know we can make Solid State Books the best workplace it can be.” While the workers have requested voluntary recognition -- every eligible worker at the store has signed union authorization cards -- the group also filed for a union election last Friday, in case management fails to voluntarily recognize the union. The union would cover seven employees at the store located at 600 H Street NE. ““We are all in this together,” said the workers.

Labor Quote: Dolly Parton

3/29/2023

9 to 5, yeah/They got you where they want you/There's a better life/And you dream about it, don't you/It's a rich man's game/No matter what they call it/And you spend your life/Puttin' money in his wallet
Dolly Parton hit number one on the record charts on this date in 1981 with "9 to 5," her anthem to the daily grind.
