“We decided early that we were not going to let ‘right to work’ come to West Virginia,” reports UFCW Local 400. Low turnout last November by Democrats, along with money from wealthy out-of-state corporations and donors like the Koch brothers combined to bring anti-worker forces into power, as, for the first time in 84 years, Republicans won majorities in both houses of the West Virginia legislature. Local 400 “pulled six strong members out of their stores to help lead the fight,” and lead lobbyist Sterling Ball was at the state capitol every day, “joined whenever possible by West Virginia Regional Director Chuck Miller, President Mark Federici, and members from around the state.” Click below to read more... Washington Post reporter Lydia DePillis’ recent Facebook post about why she joined the Newspaper Guild should be required reading for every union grappling with the challenge of “free riders,” or workers who are represented by a union but don’t have to join. “I felt no strong motivation to join,” writes DePillis. “Like many in my generation, my parents weren’t in unions, so I had little personal contact with them. Like many young journalists in particular, I feel downright lucky to have a job at all, and no right to demand anything more. A judge at the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) on Wednesday found T-Mobile U.S. guilty of engaging in nationwide labor law violations against workers. The unprecedented ruling comes after a rare move last year by the NLRB consolidating multiple complaints against T-Mobile U.S. for illegal actions and policies in Albuquerque, N.M.; Wichita, Kan.; Charleston, S.C., and New York City.
