“Fires can’t be made with dead embers, nor can enthusiasm be stirred by spiritless men. Enthusiasm in our daily work lightens effort and turns even labor into pleasant tasks.”
There are a few spaces left in today's Teamsters History Tour, and we have some free passes -- email [email protected] -- for tonight's gripping film The Measure of a Man at the AFI, in which an unemployed everyman must submit to a series of quietly humiliating ordeals in his search for work. Directed by Stéphane Brizé, this 2015 film pushes the viewer to critique the realities of our new economic order and labor system. Organizers “hope this conference is an opportunity to develop an offensive strategy in the changed political climate, at a moment of backlash against advancements we’ve been making over 50 years.” Featured speakers include Metro Washington Council president Jackie Jeter, National Education Association Secretary-Treasurer Princess Moss and Carmen Perez, Executive Director, The Gathering for Justice and one of the founders of the Women's March on Washington. Plenaries will also focus on "Building Worker Power Under a Trump Administration" and "Messaging to Win." The conference will be held at Howard University. Info and registration here. "The first thing I want to say to you as individuals and as a movement-if you’re going to be something, if you’re going to do something, you have to be proud of yourself. And you have to be proud of your heritage as a Labor Movement just as you are proud of your family, or your religion, or whatever else it might be."
