Three electrical outages did not dim the enthusiasm by the 7,000 union supporters who packed the stands Friday night for the 9th Annual Labor Night at the Nats fundraiser for the Community Services Agency’s Emergency Assistance Fund. The first pitch for the Nats-Dodgers game was skillfully delivered by ATU 689’s Larry Lockley, with Kendall Martin, Iron Workers 5, supervising the manager’s exchange of rosters and LaTonya Robinson, AFGE 3615, shouting out “Play Ball!” to get the game rolling. For the 9th year in a row, fans were treated to AFSCME staffer Renee Barnes’ heartfelt rendition of the National Anthem. And this year, Metro Washington Council President Jos Williams and NoVA Labor Federation President Dan Duncan held the tape for the President’s Race which was won by Honest Abe. “With low temps and humidity, a great time was had by all!” says CSA Executive Director Kathleen McKirchy. NOTE: If you still have your ticket for Friday’s game, you can exchange it for another game with the seats as close as possible to the location of your tickets. Go here to schedule your new game. The 100th anniversary of labor martyr Joe Hill’s death is being marked this week with two concerts. An immigrant and organizer at the turn of the century, Hill was executed by a Utah firing squad in 1915 after being convicted of what have now been established as trumped-up charges. The Joe Hill Roadshow is celebrating the life and legacy of this iconic organizer with a series of concerts, including: Thursday, July 23, Washington, DC: Magpie, Charlie King, DC Labor Chorus and George Mann in concert. The Community Services Agency still needs a few folks to help cover their table at the upcoming Sheet Metal Workers Business Agents’ National Conference. CSA has been designated the official charitable organization for the conference, and needs volunteers to cover the table in 2 hour shifts at the Washington Hilton July 27-30 from 8am-12noon and 1pm to4pm. If you can help, please contact Executive Director Kathleen McKirchy,[email protected], 202 974-8221. “All contributions by conference attendees will benefit the Emergency Assistance Fund!” says CSA Executive Director Kathleen McKirchy.
