Solidarity Center Report: Empowering Workers, Creating Safe Workplaces

8/29/2014

Picture
More than 1.1 million people in Asia die each year from workplace hazards or accidents. A new Solidarity Center report highlights how trade unions and other civil society organizations across Asia formed a unique network to assist workers exposed to dangerous and unhealthy workplaces, train victims to become advocates and spokespeople and make positive change at the workplace and in the legislature. “Asia NETWORK: Empowering Workers, Creating Safe Workplaces” offers a look at strategies for empowering workers who bear the weight of the Asian growth model at the risk of their health, livelihoods and lives. Find out more at the Solidarity Center.

Has Bloomberg Banned the Union Bug at BNA?

8/27/2014

Picture
A recent mailing promoting the 2014 edition of the Directory of U.S. Labor Organizations caught the eye of a local printer’s union. “It has no union label!” says Janice Bort of GCIU/IBT Local 72-C. Bort says that since Bloomberg bought the Bureau of National Affairs, which publishes the Directory as well as many other labor-focused publications, the once-ubiquitous union bug has been increasingly hard to spot. The Directory mailing “is only one example of a number of items being printed for unions that no longer carry the union label by BNA/Bloomberg,” says Bort. “If you get a publication or book from BNA Books that does not have a union label we need to let them know it is not OK.” Local 72 is checking to see whether the Directory itself was published by a union printshop; BNA Books/Bloomberg owns McArdle Printing Company. one of the oldest union companies in Washington, DC.
