An album of Michael Leslie's photos of the August 15 benefit concert for singer Pam Parker has been posted on the Metro Council's Facebook page. The concert boasted a star-studded line-up, including The Fruit of Labor Singing Ensemble/Black Workers for Justice Cultural Ambassadors, Luci Murphy, the DC Labor Chorus, the Charm City Labor Chorus, Anne Feeney, Joe Uehlein and Pam Parker herself. UFCW Local 400 member Yves Gomes (at right) made history August 16 when he was the first undocumented and youngest person ever elected to the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA) Executive Board. Gomes works at Safeway in Silver Spring. Founded in 1992, APALA is the national organization of Asian Pacific American (APA) union members and has played a unique role in addressing the workplace issues of the 660,000 APA union members and as the bridge between the broader labor movement and the APA community. Local transit workers won two major victories recently, reports the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU). After ATU filed a group grievance against private contractor First Transit over its violation of DC’s paid sick days law, First Transit agreed to bring its policies into compliance with the law, retract disciplinary points from current employees, and re-hire workers who were unjustly fired. And after years of bargaining attempts, the more than 150 MetroAccess Call Center workers employed by private contractor MV Transportation ratified a new contract this week that includes pay raises, hourly guarantees for full-timers, and more.
