Teamsters 639 and IUOE 99 also represent workers in the warehouse, and UFCW Local 400, whose members work in area Safeway stores, has also been involved in the talks, which are expected to continue. “Maryland State Senator Anthony Muse and (former Maryland Delegate) Aisha Braveboy have been a tremendous help,” Brooks added, “as has been all the solidarity we’ve received from the local labor movement.” While no actions are currently planned, area activists are urged to sign up for text updates as developments unfold: text PGJOBS to 86466. photo: Metro Council delegates sign up for Safeway warehouse campaign updates at Monday's meeting; photo by Chris Garlock/Union City Exposing the negative impact the country’s largest employer has on all American workers, local retail workers, community leaders and Walmart workers will rally at the H Street Walmart this afternoon (see Calendar, above) as part of a nationwide “Are You With Us?” grassroots initiative. By paying employees poverty-level wages, cutting hours and schedules, Walmart forces workers into part-time jobs and salaries with insufficient benefits, says OUR Walmart, which is coordinating rallies and actions at hundreds of Walmart stores across the country as well as a targeted national ad campaign. “Everyday, all across this nation, countless hard-working Walmart workers live in poverty, struggle to pay bills, and are unable to support their families,” says OUR Walmart. “We are asking Walmart consumers to call management and tell them to improve Walmart workers’ wages and workplace benefits.”photo: Black Friday demo at H Street Walmart; photo courtesy Answer Coalition Twitter |
