Tell Congress to oppose attacks on DC
After the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, Congress finally returned to session last week — and they are wasting no time re-starting their attacks against DC.
Two bills attacking DC are scheduled for a House vote tomorrow, and four more bills expected to come for a vote soon. These are only the latest of more than 40 bills House members have introduced attacking DC. Email or call House members with our allies at Free DC and tell them to oppose all these bills:
Here's a quick overview of the bills scheduled for votes in the House tomorrow:
H.R. 5214, the “District of Columbia Cash Bail Reform Act of 2025" will attempt to return DC to a cash bail system, a practice which we know is racist and that keeps innocent people in jail if they can’t pay their way out.
H.R. 5107/S.2687, the “Common-Sense Law Enforcement and Accountability Now in DC Act of 2025" will attempt to undo DC’s 2022 police reforms that prohibit police from wearing masks and expanded the use of body-worn cameras, among other provisions.
Four additional bills against DC are expected to follow soon:
H.R. 5179, the "District of Columbia Attorney General Appointment Reform Act" will attempt to eliminate DC’s locally elected Attorney General.
H.R. 5172, the "Strong Sentences for Safer D.C. Streets Act" will attempt to increase or establish mandatory minimum sentences for a number of offenses, and remove the exception for minors.
H.R. 5242/S. 2815, to repeal D.C.’s Incarceration Reduction Amendment Act of 2016 and the Second Chance Amendment Act of 2022." An amendment was added to this bill in committee that would prohibit automated traffic enforcement in DC and undo the no-right-on-red traffic safety law.
H.R. 5163, the "Clean and Managed Public Spaces Act" will attempt to prohibit camping on public property in DC — effectively criminalizing homelessness.
Returning DC to cash bail, undoing police accountability measures like body-worn cameras, eliminating DC's elected Attorney General, requiring mandatory minimum sentences, and criminalizing homelessness won't make DC safer, stronger, or better for working families.
Yesterday the Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO joined our partners at the American Federation of Teachers, National Education Association, and SEIU to make it clear we oppose all attacks on DC and we expect members of Congress to do the same. Now, we want you to add your voice.
