A number of DC-based international unions also won awards; go to dclabor.org for the complete list of winners. On today’s labor calendar, there’s a reception tonight from 5 to 7pm for the “For Justice, Liberty, and Equality: Unions Making History in America” exhibit at the University of Maryland in College Park. Complete details at dclabor.org, click on Calendar Here’s today's labor history: On this date in 1927, the first “talkie” movie, The Jazz Singer, premiered in New York City. Within three years, theater jobs for some 22,000 musicians who accompanied silent movies were wiped out, while only a few hundred jobs for musicians performing on soundtracks were created by the new technology. Today’s labor quote is by Joe Hill, who said: “A pamphlet, no matter how good, is never read more than once, but a song is learned by heart and repeated over and over."

Grant, a nurse at the VA hospital in Washington, DC, is part of a delegation of 50 volunteer registered nurses from across the U.S. who are joining a unique, multi-union two-week disaster relief effort heading to Puerto Rico to provide medical aid in the wake of the ongoing humanitarian crisis following Hurricane Maria. “I’ve never done anything like this before but nursing is a calling, the need is great and I wanted to help out,” said Grant, who’s a member of National Nurses United. Today’s labor quote is by Lech Walesa, from his acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize, which he won on this date in 1983. Lech Walesa, who said: "We desire peace - and that is why we have never resorted to physical force. We crave for justice - and that is why we are so persistent in the struggle for our rights. Long before Hurricanes Irma and Maria hit, Puerto Rico was suffering the effects of the storm caused by the island's $72 billion dollar debt crisis at the hands of hedge funds and big banks.
A rally to show support for the people of Puerto Rico is planned for today at noon at the White House, organized by VAMOS4PR, a network of labor, community, cultural and human rights organizations and individuals, led locally by SEIU 32BJ. Here’s today's labor history: On this date in 1961, the United Mine Workers of America voted to re-affiliate with the AFL-CIO after years of on-and-off conflict with the federation. In 2009 the union’s leader, Richard Trumka, became president of the AFL-CIO, which he still leads today. Today’s labor quote is by John L. Lewis, president of the United Mine Workers of America from 1920 to 1960, who said: "Let the workers organize. Let the toilers assemble. Let their crystallized voice proclaim their injustices and demand their privileges. Let all thoughtful citizens sustain them, for the future of Labor is the future of America." |
