Holiday travelers can show their support for local airport workers fighting for a union by “stickering up” before catching their flights from National or Dulles airports. Nearly 300 employees of Huntleigh USA, including wheelchair escorts, baggage handlers, skycaps and others have been organizing for nearly two years to improve working standards at both National and Dulles airports. “The workers are about to go on their third strike and could really use the support,” says Guillermo Zamora, Organizing Team Lead for SEIU 32BJ. Last month, Violetta Aquino, a Reservations Agent at MV Transportation’s WMATA MetroAccess Operations Control Center, was pulled into the office by management.
The boss accused her of violating company policy and threatened to fire her. As an educated member of ATU Local 1764, Aquino knew that she needed a steward and that she had the right to have one present. But MV’s manager denied her requests for a steward and fired her. Local 1764 Steward Trevis Brown sprang into action, filing a grievance contesting the allegations and pointing out that the company violated Violetta’s legal rights by refusing her requests for representation. Caught red-handed, MV not only immediately brought Violetta back to work, but paid her for the two weeks of wages she lost while she was out of work. You can see a photo of a very happy Violetta and Trevis on our website at dclabor.org On today's labor calendar, it’s “Labor Night” at tonight’s performance of "The Pajama Game" at Arena Stage, with cast members doing a TalkBack after the show, which starts at 7:30. Kent; performed by Jones). Plus a holiday song performed by McKinney. International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) members express their solidarity in a number of ways – on the strike line, at the ballot box or simply with some words of encouragement to a union brother or sister. UnioNation is a band founded by IAM members from across the country -- and even Canada -- who hope their songs will inspire union and non-union workers to fight for justice on the job; for them, solidarity means a guitar chord, a chorus verse, and even their very own albums. The band has proven to be an outlet for IAM members with a musical talent and an urge to spread the word about the labor movement. Click here for details on the band and their CDs. This fall, as millions of women have posted their experiences with sexual harassment or assault under the hashtag #MeToo, women in the UNITE HERE union are leading the demand for justice against harassment inside their workplaces too. UNITE HERE Local 23 reports that Maryom Meth at Sky Chefs Dulles Airport filed a grievance against her supervisor, alleging that Maryom’s manager physically pulled off her hijab, which she wears for her religious beliefs. She also filed a complaint with the EEOC for religious and sexual harassment.
The union urges all workers to promptly report sexual or gender-based harassment in the workplace.
