Montgomery County pulled Russian-made liquors from their store shelves on Saturday, one day after UFCW Local 1994 MCGEO called on County Executive Marc Elrich and the Alcohol Beverage Service (ABS) to remove the Russian brands after Russia's invasion of Ukraine last week. “In solidarity with the people of Ukraine, all products produced in Russia have been removed from the County’s Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS) stores,” said County Executive Marc Elrich. "We're proud to have played a part, however small, in standing up for the people of Ukraine,” said Local 1994 President Gino Renne. “Local 1994's guiding principles include speaking up against injustice." Renne thanked Elrich and the Alcohol and Beverage Services Department “for taking swift action to support Ukraine. Together, we can get things done."
NewsGuild Local 32035 members at Bloomberg Industry Group will hit the street today at 12:30 (see Calendar) to support their push for a new contract. “We are in a difficult fight to secure guaranteed work flexibility and adequate wage increases to match soaring inflation, and we need your help,” reports Andrew Kreighbaum. The unit’s current deal expires at midnight tonight. “As managers seek to force employees back to the office this year, this contract fight is a test of our efforts to shape the future of our workplaces.”
Health professionals in Sri Lanka took to the streets of Colombo this week to protest a recent presidential decree that public health and electricity provision are essential services, effectively banning all workers in those sectors from striking. The protest comes after three months of island-wide strike action by the Government Nursing Officers’ Association (GNOA), which demanded a resolution of salary anomalies, among other issues.
