After more than two years of back-and-forth with UNFI corporate executives, UFCW Local 400 remains without a contract at Shoppers. “It wasn’t until we announced our first protest on July 20th that UNFI started to respond,” said Local 400. “Enough is enough, we won’t let up until we get the fair contract we deserve!” Weekly protests on Wednesdays at area Shoppers are scheduled on July 27 (1505 Stafford Market Place, Stafford, VA), August 3 (7790 Riverdale Rd, New Carrollton, MD), 10 (6300 Coventry Way, Clinton, MD) & 17 (4720 Cherry Hill Rd, College Park, MD). Prince George’s County Council candidates Eric Olson (District 3), Wanika Fisher (D2), Krystal Oriadha (D7) and Edward P. Burroughs (D8) were among the labor-endorsed candidates who notched wins in last week’s Maryland primary. “We can count on these candidates to stand by our members and be strong advocates for their interests,” said MWC Political Director Dejah Desiree Williams. The Metro Washington Council coordinated with affiliates and the Maryland and DC AFL-CIO to make calls and knock on the doors of thousands of union voters in local races to urge support and turn out for candidates who had earned labor’s endorsement. “We congratulate all our candidates for their efforts, thank our affiliates for their hard work, and look forward to moving together in unity in the general election this Fall to elect political leaders who will fight for working men and women of this state,” said Williams. photo: ATU 689 member at the polls during the July 19 Maryland primary; photo by Chris Garlock/Union City Are you an AAPI (Asian American/Pacific Islander) worker or retiree? If you answered yes to any of these questions and/or would like to meet up with like-minded labor and community activists, please join the Maryland chapter of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, AFL-CIO Summer Meet and Greet on Sunday, July 31, 2 pm at Virginia Rodino’s, 832 Trinity Street in Baltimore. “All friends, allies and members are welcome to attend,” says Rodino. “Light fare and refreshments will be served; please feel free to BYOB or a snack to share.” RSVP: [email protected]
