Police were called into a transit workers union meeting Tuesday after WMATA attempted to block ATU 689 members from holding an informational meeting at the Four Mile bus garage in Arlington, Virginia. “Metro’s attempt to intimidate and stop union membership from meeting is a direct reflection of the culture of intimidation that has led to so many of the employee-management issues,” ATU 689 said in a statement. No arrests were made, but the union denounced “Metro’s failure to respect the law” and said it will be filing charges with the Department of Labor.
On today’s labor calendar, Your Rights At Work returns with a new live show about rights on the job today at 1p here on WPFW. Here’s today's labor history: On this date in 1912, the “Bread & Roses” textile strike of 32,000 women and children began in Lawrence, Massachusetts. It lasted 10 weeks and ended in victory. The first millworkers to walk out were Polish women, who, upon collecting their pay, exclaimed that they had been cheated and promptly abandoned their looms. Today’s labor quote is by Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, a member of the IWW who helped lead the Bread and Roses strike. Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, who said: "There is less violence against labor today, but there are more legal restrictions... There has been labor protection by law but there has also been labor repression by law." Union City Radio is supported by UnionPlus, which provides unique products and discounts for working families. Details at unionplus.org After nearly two years of negotiations, D.C. Streetcar frontline workers have ratified their first contract. ATU Local 689 and the Streetcar’s private operators signed the deal last Friday. Highlights include wages competitive with their WMATA counterparts, and an affordable medical insurance program. Workers at the D.C. Streetcar voted overwhelmingly in March 2016 to join ATU 689, which already represents more than 13,000 area transit workers.

Here’s today's labor history: On this date in 1860, in what is described as the worst industrial disaster in state history, the Pemberton Mill in Lawrence, Massachusetts collapsed, trapping 900 workers, mostly Irish women. More than 100 died, and scores more were injured in the collapse and ensuing fire. Too much machinery had been crammed into the building. Today’s labor quote is by Joe Hill, who said: “All the world is made of music. We are all strings on a lyre. We resonate. We sing together.” Union City Radio is supported by UnionPlus, which provides unique products and discounts for working families. Details at unionplus.org Hosted by Chris Garlock The North American Martyrs are: Eamon Clifford on guitar and vocals, Richard Benjumea on lead guitar, Christopher Broholm on trumpet and vocals, Noah Kalish on bass and Steve Nejelski on drums. The band seamlessly merges American and Latin melodies and rhythms into a tapestry that is reflective of a shared DMV heritage. They are unique for their almost exclusive use of original material and sophisticated songwriting. Three of the band's principles (Benjumea, Broholm, and Clifford) are all serious songwriters. The band has been labeled Honky-Tina for the way they merge Country, Latin, Jazz, and Blues for a distinct and original sound. The band has played throughout the DC area and also in Baltimore. Find out more on the North American Martyrs Facebook page. Produced by Jason Roe and engineered by Robin Smith and Ciera Shine |
