(audio) UFCW rally sfx
Hundreds of union Safeway employees, members of United Food & Commercial Workers Locals 400 and 27 rallied yesterday with elected officials, community leaders and other allies, telling management to negotiate a fair contract or face a strike. At the same rally, however, Giant workers announced they had reached a tentative agreement on a new contract, averting a potential work stoppage. “None of us want to strike,” said Local 400 president Mark Federici, “but if this is the only option to gain a fair contract, we’re ready.” On today’s labor calendar, tune in at 1 o’clock this afternoon here on WPFW for this week’s edition of Your Rights At Work, when our guests will include actor Tony Sancho, who’s appearing in “Mother Road” at Arena Stage; for details and the latest local labor events listings, go to dclabor.org and click on Calendar. In today’s labor history, on this date in 1908, a rally for the unemployed became a major confrontation in Philadelphia, with 18 arrested for demanding jobs. Today’s labor quote is by Richard Trumka, president of the United Mine Workers during the 10-month strike against Pittston in Virginia, Kentucky and West Virginia, which was settled on this date in 1990. Thank you so much! (audio) We created this thing called VIP, the Voter Infrastructure Project.
That’s AFL-CIO Executive Vice President Tefere Gebre… (audio) And we had 10 organizers whose job was every day six days a week, Monday through Saturday, they show up in the morning. We give them a precinct and a clipboard and a survey and voter registration cards and they spend six hours a day knocking on doors and talking to people precinct-by-precinct. We knew that was what was required actually to change a gigantically deep red county like Orange County. It was not only red in political philosophy; it was even redder in money because really even nationally that was the source of actually where right-winged ideology came from and the right-winged resources came from. And we decided we’re going to use our foot and we’re going to walk and we’re going to invest. So long story short, our VIP program ended up registering 117,000 community members to vote. Thank you! Earlier this month, the Montgomery County Council passed Bill 35-19, Personnel-Collective Bargaining-Certified Representative-Duty of Fair Representation. The bill’s name is a mouthful, but its purpose is very simple: under Bill 35-19, members of the county’s main labor unions who don’t pay dues won’t be entitled to union representation when they file grievances against the county unless they pay for that representation. Representing workers who file grievances is time consuming and costly for unions, which provide attorneys to represent the employee.
The bill was introduced by council Vice President Tom Hucker – and supported by the county’s public employee labor unions -- in response to the Supreme Court’s 2018 Janus ruling, part of the right wing’s ongoing attempt to defund the American labor movement. “It’s only fair that workers who reap the benefits of collective bargaining agreements pay their share of the costs for negotiating and carrying out those agreements,” said Hucker. On today’s labor calendar, the Metro Washington Council meets tonight at 6:30 at the AFL-CIO; for the latest local labor events listings, go to dclabor.org and click on Calendar. Today’s labor quote is by Julia Reichert, co-director of American Factory, winner of this year’s Best Documentary Feature Academy Award.
