Registered nurses at George Washington University Hospital vote to unionizeNurses elect DC Nurses Association as collective bargaining representative FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 1, 2023 CONTACT: Metro Washington Council, AFL-CIO, [email protected] Washington, DC — Earlier today, registered nurses at George Washington University Hospital (GWUH) voted to form a union and elected the DC Nurses Association as their collective bargaining representative. The union effort comes during a nationwide nursing shortage. Nurses at GWUH cited staffing shortages among the reasons to pursue a union. “This is a victory for every nurse who wants to provide better care for patients and safer working conditions,” said Dyana Forester, president of the Metro Washington Council, AFL-CIO. “To nurses at GWUH and all the members of DC Nurses Association, we see you, we value you, and your work matters.” “This is the biggest win for DC nurses in over four decades and is reflective of a sea change in organizing not only in the District of Columbia, but throughout the United States,” said Edward Smith, executive director of DC Nurses Association. “It shows that when nurses stand together against a billion dollar, for profit, anti-union employer, we can still win.” Voting in the union election began on Thursday, June 28 and concluded on Saturday, July 1. GWUH nurses voted 310-207 in favor of the union. Metro Washington Council, AFL-CIO unites nearly 200 local affiliate unions who together represent more than 150,000 members in DC and Maryland. The District of Columbia Nurses Association (DCNA) is the professional organization for registered nurses who live and/or work in the District. DCNA is an Affiliate member of the Metro Washington Council. # # #
