That’s UAW striker Jeff Beard on the White Marsh picket line Tuesday. The United Auto Workers and General Motors said Wednesday that they had reached a tentative agreement on a new labor contract that could end a monthlong strike that has idled G.M. plants across the Midwest and the South. Here’s Jeff, talking about the solidarity that helped the strikers hold strong over the last month (picketline audio). On today’s labor calendar, tune in at 1p for this week’s edition of Your Rights At Work, here on WPFW; then at 4, supermarket workers will rally for a contract in both Northwest DC and Alexandria; For complete details and all the latest local labor calendar listings, go to dclabor.org and click on Calendar. Strikers' wives walked picket lines for seven months when their men were enjoined during the 14-month strike against the New Jersey Zinc Company. Today’s labor quote is from The Bible, Matthew 5:13, which says: "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot." Union City Radio is supported by our friends at Union Plus.
