Federal employees who are new parents are one step closer to receiving an important work/life benefit they have been awaiting for years: 12 weeks of paid leave to take care of a new child.
Congress last week reached a deal on the National Defense Authorization Act that includes 12 weeks of paid parental leave for federal employees to use to care for a new baby after birth, adoption or the initiation of foster care. Currently, federal employees are eligible to receive 12 weeks of unpaid leave. The United States is the only developed country that does not offer nationwide paid parental leave. In Germany, all new mothers receive 43 weeks; new Swedish moms get 35 weeks, and Norwegian mothers are entitled to 45 weeks of paid leave. In today’s labor history, on this date in 1886, a small group of black farmers organized the Colored Farmers’ National Alliance and Cooperative Union in Houston County, Texas. They had been barred from membership in the all-white Southern Farmers’ Alliance. Through intensive organizing, along with merging with another black farmers group, the renamed Colored Alliance by 1891 claimed a membership of 1.2 million. Today’s labor quote is Gloria Steinem, who said: “Feminism has never been about getting a job for one woman. It's about making life more fair for women everywhere. It's not about a piece of the existing pie; there are too many of us for that. It's about baking a new pie.” Union City Radio is supported by our friends at Union Plus.
