In today’s labor history, on this date in 1891, two African-American sharecroppers were killed during an ultimately unsuccessful cotton-pickers strike in Lee County, Arkansas. By the time the strike had been suppressed, 15 African-Americans had died and another six had been imprisoned. A white plantation manager was killed as well. Lewis Hine, who said: “There is work that profits children, and there is work that brings profit only to employers.
