Teamsters 639 president Thomas Ratliff will be awarded the JC Turner Award for Outstanding Trades Unionist of the Year at the Metro Washington Council, AFL-CIO’s 38th annual Evening With Labor Awards Dinner/Dance on Saturday, March 14. The event will be held at the Omni Shoreham Hotel beginning at 6:30p with a cash bar reception, followed by dinner and awards beginning at 7:30p sharp. About a dozen trade unionists and their families marched behind the NoVA Labor banner during the annual Martin Luther King Day parade in Leesburg, VA, on Monday. The group -- which included members from CWA, IAFF, NEA, SIU and UA -- were part of the approximately 500 who pay tribute to the legacy of Dr. King through a march followed by a program at the Douglas Community Center. "NoVA Labor has been honored to march with friends and allies in Leesburg for a decade," noted NoVA Labor President Daniel Duncan. "It is a wonderful experience." Union members passed out signs reading "All Work Has Dignity" with Dr. King's image prior to the start of the parade. photo by Dan Duncan After almost eight decades as The Newspaper Guild, delegates to the union's convention voted January 17 to officially change its name to The NewsGuild. Earlier, they re-elected President Bernie Lunzer, a name change advocate, without opposition.
