If the latest political campaign news has got you down, Michael Moore's latest film, "Where to Invade Next" will buoy your spirits. "Instead of pointing out our flaws, he imagines our possibilities," wrote Sophia A. McClennen in Salon. "And instead of wallowing in fear and panic, he offers practical ideas for productive change." DC's own Con Carbon says simply "Go see this movie!" Playing at area theaters now. Click here to see the trailer. “You've probably heard this from dozens already, but Pete Seeger's dead,” writes David Shapiro. Sadly, very true, but his spirit lives on! (In our 2/23 Today in Labor History we noted that “Woody Guthrie’s life and work inspired millions while he lived and continues to do so through musicians such as his son Arlo, Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Billy Bragg and Bruce Springsteen, to name just a few.”) “They began work at 5:30 and quit at 7 at night. Children six years old going home to lie on a straw pallet until time to resume work the next morning! I have seen the hair torn out of their heads by the machinery, their scalps torn off, and yet not a single tear was shed, while the poodle dogs were loved and caressed and carried to the seashore.”
Metro Washington Council delegates on Monday night nominated Jackie Jeter to serve as President. If elected at next month's meeting as expected (she's the only candidate), Jeter (right), who's president of ATU Local 689, will be the Metro Council's first female president. "I'm tremendously excited at the chance to work with the Council's leadership to improve the lives of working people across the metro region," Jeter told Union City. "Together with our new Executive Director and the dynamic combination of new blood and experienced hands on the Board, I know we'll achieve great things." The election will be held at the March 21 Council meeting. See below for other Board nominees. |
