Iron Workers Local 201 (Rodmen) in Northeast DC has been hosting a construction pre-apprenticeship program for low-income young District residents this summer, sponsored by CHOICE, the Community Hub for Opportunities in Construction Education, the former DC building trades council. From safety and health to math and blue print reading and hands-on experience, the class is designed to give students a real feel for what's involved in the construction trades, as well as to make valuable contacts with DC-area apprenticeship programs. The 6-week class is funded through the DC Department of Employment Services summer youth and apprenticeship office programs for DC residents. The program utilizes the Building Trades Multi-Craft Core Curriculum, which prepares folks for entry into any trade, as does CSA’s Building Futures program.
