Summer Interns Learn About the Movement

6/6/2016

Picture
More than forty interns turned out for last Friday's Summer Labor Intern Orientation, which provided an opportunity fornetworking and learning about the labor movement. A broad range of organizations were represented, including the IBEW, NLRB, AFL-CIO, Kalmanovitz Initiative at Georgetown, Rutgers, AFT, ATU, Good Jobs First, Organizing Neighborhood Equity DC (ONE DC), Many Languages One Voice (MLOV), DC Jobs with Justice, and the Metro Washington Council. James Benton, PhD candidate at Georgetown, provided an overview of labor history. Jamal Watkins and Sarah Walling from the AFL-CIO presented a Common Sense Economics for Young Workers session, and Silvia Fabela from the AFL-CIO ran a workshop on generational diversity in the workplace. The IBEW, Metro Washington Council, Rutgers School of Management and Labor Studies, and the Kalmanovitz Initiative at Georgetown University coordinated the all-day orientation. There will be several other events throughout the summer for labor movement interns, including a July 14 Bread and Roses book event with Bill Fletcher at Busboys and Poets, a labor history walking tour, and a reception for interns at the end of the summer. Stay tuned for more updates from Metro Council summer intern Christian Berk, a student at Rutgers. - Nick Wertsch, Kalmanovitz Initiative
