Nearly a thousand Registered Nurses in West Virginia now have the ability to negotiate for safe staffing and improved patient care at Cabell Huntington Hospital after voting to organize with SEIU 1199. It’s one of the biggest organizing victories since West Virginia became a Right-to-Work state, and 1199 said that “nurses are sending a resounding message to working people across West Virginia that forming a union is the best way to shift the balance of power away from corporations and toward the people.”

Shuler led off an all-star line-up of speakers yesterday that included Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, Senator Ben Cardin and a host of prominent labor leaders. WMATA private contractor Transdev has finally agreed to return to the bargaining table in Lorton, Virginia, where bus drivers have now been on strike for 23 days. Transdev’s return to the bargaining table comes just days after Transdev workers at Fairfax Connector overwhelmingly voted to authorize a strike if necessary. “We hope that this time, Transdev will stay at the table until a tentative agreement that is fair and just is reached,” said ATU president John Costa. “Our members care about our riders,” Costa added, noting that thousands of Metrobus riders have been left stranded and their commutes have doubled in length and cost. “It's time,” Costa said, “for Transdev to bargain in good faith.” On today’s labor calendar, there’s a rally for the striking bus drivers tomorrow starting at 11am in Old Town Square, in Fairfax, VA; For complete details go to dclabor.org and click on Calendar.
