Members of Local 26 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers -- or IBEW -- honored the memory of all veterans earlier this week by helping wash the walls of both the Vietnam and Korean war memorials in preparation for the July 4 independence celebration. “Members brought their children and grandparents in recognition of the generational ties that connect us in hope and sacrifice for our country,” said Local 26’s Linda Lawrence. The IBEW Local 26 V-ToP team – V-ToP stands for Virginia Team on Politics -- turned out about 70 members “to honor the family and veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect and preserve the ideals of freedom and democracy,” Lawrence added. Local 26 contractor Chesapeake/Aldridge Electric supported the volunteers. Check out photos on our website at dclabor.org.
Here’s today's labor history: On this date in 1926, transit workers in New York City began what would be an ultimately unsuccessful 3-week strike against the then-privately owned IRT subway. Most transit workers at the time labored seven days a week, up to 11 and a half hours a day. Today’s labor quote is by rail union leader Eugene V. Debs, arrested on this date in 1894 during the Pullman strike, described by the New York Times as "a struggle between the greatest and most important labor organization and the entire railroad capital" that involved some 250,000 workers in 27 states at its peak. Eugene Victor Debs, who said: “I would not be a capitalist; I would be a man; you cannot be both at the same time.”
