Here’s today's labor history:
On this date in 1928, Alabama outlawed the leasing of convicts to mine coal, a practice that had been in place since 1848. In 1898, most of the state's revenue came from this source, and fully 25 percent of all Black leased convicts died.
And in 2013, nineteen firefighters died when they were overtaken by a wildfire they are battling in a forest northwest of Phoenix, Arizona. It was the deadliest wildfire involving firefighters in the U.S. in at least 30 years.
Today’s labor quote is by Martin Luther King, Jr., who said
“Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and inhumane.”
