This fall, as millions of women have posted their experiences with sexual harassment or assault under the hashtag #MeToo, women in the UNITE HERE union are leading the demand for justice against harassment inside their workplaces too. UNITE HERE Local 23 reports that Maryom Meth at Sky Chefs Dulles Airport filed a grievance against her supervisor, alleging that Maryom’s manager physically pulled off her hijab, which she wears for her religious beliefs. She also filed a complaint with the EEOC for religious and sexual harassment.
The union urges all workers to promptly report sexual or gender-based harassment in the workplace. On today's labor calendar, “School of Babel” screens tonight in the Films Across Borders series at the French Embassy at 7pm; the screening is free but you must RSVP; complete details on our website, dclabor.org, click on Calendar. Here’s today's labor history: On this date in 2006, a U.S. immigration sweep of half a dozen Swift meat plants resulted in arrests of nearly 1,300 undocumented workers. Today’s labor quote is by Juan Somavia, Director-General of the International Labour Organization in 2001, when the UN marked the first International Migrants Day. Juan Somavia, who said: “Migrants are an asset to every country where they bring their labour. Let us give them the dignity they deserve as human beings and the respect they deserve as workers.” Union City Radio is supported by UnionPlus, which provides unique products and discounts for working families.
