Here’s a follow-up to yesterday’s report on the four-year extension of contracts for CWA members at Verizon, which came a year before expiration in August 2019.
The deal – which covers over 34,000 Verizon workers, including call center workers, and central office and field technicians -- comes amid a wave of worker actions this year to raise wages, improve working conditions, and hold corporations accountable. "Like the successful teacher strikes this spring, Verizon's willingness to come to the table early and agree to this contract is yet another testament to the power of working people standing together," said CWA, the Communications Workers of America. CWA Local 2108 president Marilyn Irwin called the deal "a testament to the strength, solidarity and sacrifice our members and allies exhibited during our forty-nine day strike in 2016." In today's labor history, on this date in 1989, Gerry Horgan, chief steward of CWA Local 1103 and a NYNEX striker in Valhalla, New York, was struck on the picket line by a car driven by the daughter of a plant manager and died the following day. What was to become a 4-month strike over healthcare benefits was in its second week. Today’s labor quote is from populist social commentator Will Rogers, killed on this date in 1935 in a plane crash in Point Barrow, Alaska. Will Rogers, who said: “Everything is changing. People are taking their comedians seriously, and the politicians as a joke, when it used to be vice versa.”
