The Teamsters Local 639 union hall was filled last night with labor and community leaders and activists from every ward in the District, who turned out to express their appreciation for Fred Allen, the longtime local labor leader and former DC COPE Chair (Fred Allen honored by DC City Council 10/13/2016 UC). DC City Council members paying tribute included Elissa Silverman, Kenyan McDuffie, Vincent Gray and Council Chair Phil Mendelson who said “You can’t run for political office in this city and not know Fred.” Added former Metro Washington Council president Jos Williams, “Fred Allen was an officer at the Metro Council for more than 40 years...his footprint leaves an indelible mark on labor.” - report by Sonte DuCote; photo: Fred Allen with CAP's Tonya Love (left) and CSA's Sonte DuCote 8/27: This post has been updated to reflect that Councilman Gray was also in attendance.
